PARAMUS, N.J. - During a powerful storm that flooded basements, uprooted trees and left tens of thousands of families without power through a late winter weekend, residents of one New Jersey county had to wait till Monday morning to buy sump pumps, generators and other cleanup tools at local stores.
That's because Bergen County - one of the country's richest retail areas with its five shopping malls and 900,000 residents - still enforces "blue laws" that prohibit Sunday shopping, except for essentials like food and gasoline. You can't buy clothes or electronics, but you can pick up a case of beer or a dozen roses, or grab lunch at a diner.

I grew up in a different part of the city and I never knew it existed," says Lewis Friedrich, who's owned an electronics shop on Woodland Avenue for 29 years. "You talk to a lot of different people and they still don't know where it is.
"Now there's a diversity of food and restaurants," says Paul Miller, a consultant hired to design economic development strategies for the neighborhood. "There are really high-quality restaurants."
"Because there's this corridor that leads directly to the airport where so many different ethnicities sit, there's this idea of having them represented in murals that set a tone and an identity for a community," says Cheryl Durgans, who's handling the initiative for Mural Arts.
