Taking note of these developments, The New York Times criticized Diebold's "flawed approach to its business" in a December editorial. "The counting of votes is a public trust," the Times declared. "Diebold, whose machines count many votes, has never acted as if it understood this.
In regard to the Hursti hack, [Kathy DeWolfe] echoes Diebold officials, maintaining that this manipulation of mock vote results was achieved under circumstances that would not exist in an actual election. DeWolfe says that Leon County elections chief [Ion Sancho] told her the Diebold machine produces a guaranteed accurate tabulation as long as no one is given access to the scanner's memory card. Diebold spokesman David Bear said in remarks quoted in The Washington Post that what Sancho did "is analogous to if...

Heads up, team, the voting machine situation requires sustained attention, but not panic or paranoia. There is time to act, but act we must.
Yes, it is high time to "view with alarm" (an editorial page cliche rivaled only by "point with pride"), and with bipartisan alarm at that. It's in everyone's interest to have the cleanest, fairest elections possible - that's one of those things you can watch even the most partisan politicians serving on legislative elections committees figure out in no time. The only way to make sure nobody's ox gets gored is to keep it clean. If you don't think there are just as many bright, 14-year-old hackers who would rig a vote in favor of Democrats as there are who would rig it for Republicans, you've been neglecting the 14-year-old hacker set.

That's the message he sent when he picked Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate. True, the VP job doesn't require much heavy lifting, but it's the potential for promotion that makes [John McCain]'s selection so momentous. At 72 years of age and with a history of health problems, McCain had a responsibility to choose his understudy responsibly. He flubbed it
Wanting to look like they're "doing something," it's common for Congress to introduce bills that make things worse. Such is the case with a bipartisan bill in the Senate to "fix" the problem of unreliable, fraud-prone electronic voting machines.
Among the media and political elites, there has been an anguished outcry against Sen. Barack Obama's call to end the Bush tax giveaways to people making more than $250,000 a year....

I guess I'm going to have to say I'm not aware of the act that you are particularly referring to.
I have a strong opinion on that. Since I ran a close race two years ago, as with anything there's room for human error and there's room for error with the electronic voting machine. I believe if there's a verifiable paper trail, it's less likely for error to occur. I am in support of the paper trail, one of the few candidates to stand behind it. If I win, I pledge to s...

The news story "2 Peters voting machines tossed" (Nov. 4 and TribLIVE.com) details a clear case of voting fraud. What happened couldn't have been a "technical glitch.
First off, the electronic voting "machines" in question are computers. Second, they cannot operate without software -- application programs, which are a series of internal instructions (written by humans) that produce different but specific results based upon the entry of a "variable" (in this case, a voter's choice of candidates).

While Marion County election officials celebrate what they say was the flawless work of electronic voting machines in their county, Common Cause's West Virginia chapter is offering a cash reward to anyone who can provide evidence of electronic voting machine fraud.

The machines are old as hell," said poll worker Pamela Thrower on the steps of Jacob A. Riis Settlement House, a polling place in the housing project. She added: "I don't think they'll last another election.
Out of the 30 voters and poll workers interviewed outside of the Queensbridge polling station, some were optimistic about the possibility of getting to vote electronically. "I won't become concerned 'til something happens," said poll worker Dorothy Watts.
Others were skeptical-and some cynical. An elderly Black woman who identified herself only as Pauline said she doesn't trust electronic voting machines because of their susceptibility to fraud. She asked: "What's the purpose of having a vote if it's decided for you?"

Iowa requires more security for voting
SAN FRANCISCO - Officials overseeing elections in three states have directed local authorities to take additional security measures with a popular type of electronic voting machine to prevent election fraud.

America awoke to a brilliant blue prospect the morning after Election Day, even in regions of the country where record-setting rains had caused rivers to flood their banks. It seemed as though nothing - not floods in the Pacific Northwest, not sex or age, not concerns about voter fraud or the lack of a paper trail with new electronic voting machines, nor the glut of negative, expensive campaign ads - kept Americans from exercising their vote in record numbers in this midterm election in which no one was running for president.
Election Day began early at Boomerang Creek. Kit, who had voted by absentee ballot, was off before dawn en route to St. Louis to catch a plane. It would be a long travel day for him dealing with fog delays at the airport, plane changes, rental cars and East Coast t...
