• Two-Day Camp Explores Magnetism, Electricity

Magnetism and electricity is this year's theme for the fourth annual Pioneer Camp at the National Electronics Museum, 1745 W. Nursery Road. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 11 and 12. Participants will use hands-on activities, demonstrations and museum exhibits to explore magnetic properties and fields, electromagnetism and the basics of electricity.

• Family Science Night Held at Upland High

The theme song from the movie "Hunt For Red October" played over loudspeakers in the Upland High School Cafeteria while Andrea DiTommaso's physics project slowly moved across a tub of salt water. DiTommaso, a junior, had put together quarters, foil and wiring on styrofoam to emulate a magnetohydrodynamic boat. The boat operates silently and is powered with magnetism and electricity.

• 2 Earn Scholarships From Siemens Program

Alice Carter of Skyline High and Daniel Posch of Waterford School have won $2,000 college scholarships from the Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement. The students received the highest number of 5s -- the highest possible mark -- on AP Biology, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Computer Science AB, Environmental Science, Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, Physics C: Mechanics, and Statistics.

• Science Volunteers Offer Specialty Programs

HARPSWELL - The Maine School Science Volunteers program has entered 2008 with expanded programs and innovative modules in a growing number of schools throughout five Maine counties. MSSV is assisting Mt. Ararat High School students with science fair projects over the course of the winter/spring semester. MSSV is working with teachers and students at Brunswick Middle School to offer a new four-week course in electricity and magnetism. Also, MSSV will conduct four new classes for Lisbon High School students in March.

• A Classroom Hit at 92

Adrian Van Zweden taught his first class when Harry Truman was in the White House, and his most recent class this month. The ramrod-straight 92-year-old towered over a roomful of fourth- graders at Eastern Christian Elementary School in Midland Park. He was showing them his collection of colorful rocks and minerals and his big, old magnet.

NEW YORK (AP) -- A South Eugene High School school senior won a $100,000 scholarship at one of the nation's premier high school science competitions on Monday for his research in a new area of mathematics called string topology. The research conducted by Dmitry Vaintrob, 18, could provide knowledge that mathematicians and physicists might apply to understand electricity, magnetism and gravity, judges at the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology said.
