For more than a year, the school has been offering newly-enhanced courses to give students entry-level competency in a wide range of technical, energy-related jobs. Lisa G. Jones, associate professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at Southwest, explains: "In January 2010, Southwest received a $1.4 million Southern Energy Training Grant from the Department of Labor. The total grant came to $2.9 million, with the rest of the money being divided among the other Southern Energy Training Consortium members; Dyersburg State Community College, Jackson State Community College, Mid-South Community College, SEEDCO, National Electrical Contractor...

But those in the local solar industry worried the nation's biggest ground-mounted solar installation might be built in their backyard without Long Island labor. BP has since said it expects the project, big enough to power 4,700 homes, to provide a boost for local solar workers, generating more than 200 jobs for construction, engineering and electrical work.

  • Khaled, a 22-year-old Palestinian, studied electrical engineering in Baghdad before coming back to Lebanon to look for a job. "I have been looking for over a year with no success. I have been rejected because I am Palestinian, in spite of my credentials. In Iraq, Palestinians have more rights," he explains. Lebanese labor law treats Palestinian refugees like other non-Lebanese and requires them to have a work permit and social rights, subject to the principle of reciprocity. This means that Lebanon grants the right to work to nationals of other states whose countries grant Lebanese citizens the same right. This law naturally bars Palestinians from many jobs," says Alexander Adam, project manager at the Danish Refugee Council (DRC). "It doesn't mean that we really adhere to one party or...
