  • If it were up to Chris Bordeaux, there wouldn't be much debate about whether Roanoke should have a wind farm installed on Poor Mountain. Renewable energy sources -- hydro and wind -- make up less than two percent of Appalachian Power's fuel mix for electrical power generation, according to Bordeaux , who referred to a "Sources of our Energy" breakdown he had just received from the utility.

  • DOMINION Virginia Power provides the electricity for millions of Virginians to go about their daily business. The utility maintains a vast electrical grid, distributing energy from various sources, juggling all kinds of variables. And for its service, the utility is rewarded handsomely. State regulators allow the monopoly to post a profit virtually impossible in many competitive industries, in good times or bad.

  • EASTPORT, Maine -- The recent sale of the Eastport Boat School signals the next phase of an ongoing, eight-year effort to harness Downeast Maine's powerful tides to generate electricity. Since 2004, the Eastport-based Ocean Renewable Power Co. has been engineering, fabricating and field-testing submersible turbines that convert tidal currents into kilowatts that can be sold to electrical utilities eager to tap into renewable energy sources as a means of weaning customers from costly, fossil-fueled energy generation.

  • Nuclear plants produce near-zero emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides. Renewable Energy Often called "clean" or "green" energy, renewable energy is energy from natural resources, such as wind, plants, sunlight, rain, tides and heat from the earth.\n Only a small portion of Utah's energy comes from renewable resources; in 2006, 2.3 percent of Utah's electrical generation was from renewable sources. While prices for most energy sources in Utah will probably remain lower than the rest of the country they will continue to rise, in absolute terms, due to increasing domestic and global demand, which will be accompanied by an increase in energy consumption in Utah, caused by the rapidly-growing in-state population.

  • President Obama on Saturday put more meat on the bones of his $825 billion economic- rescue package, revealing that the plan would begin building an electrical grid for alternative-energy sources and that it would extend unemployment insurance for the third time in seven months while increasing payments. The details did not please Republican leaders, who had expressed optimism Friday about their ideas being heard by the new president after meeting with him at the White House.

  • The Bonneville Power Administration announced on Friday that it will start construction on a $185 million power transmission line that will run from the The Dalles north to the Goldendale, Wash. The project will be funded in part by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The 28-mile, 500 Kilovolt Big Eddy-Knight line is expected to create 100 construction jobs and help the BPA handle future expansion of wind turbine energy production in the area. Lauren Azar, senior advisor to the Secretary, U.S. Department of Energy, recently commented that:"By integrating renewable energy sources onto the electrical grid now, we are helping to develop a new American economy powered by clean, secure and affordable energy sources.

  • CHINA MOVING TOWARD NUCLEAR-GENERATED POWER The Nov. 4 article, "The dark side of coal," describes the air pollution in China due to their use of coal for electrical generation plants. While renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are mentioned, the article fails to make any mention of the rapidly increasing role of nuclear power in China, a significant part of the pollution solution. About 80 percent of China's electricity is produced from fossil fuels (mainly coal), and about 18 percent is from hydro-power. Last month, I was a member of the Nuclear Technology in China for the New Century delegation to China.

  • Sixty-nine serious citations with proposed penalties of $223,500, allege: unsafe cranes; fall hazards; unsafe ladders; blocked and inadequate exits; unsafe 'flammable liquid and compressed gas use and storage; locking out hazardous energy sources during maintenance and service; a lack of machine guards; unsafe electrical equipment and practices; and, failure to establish a respiratory protection program.
