A technological device that could make electric-vehicle batteries more powerful and less expensive will soon be made here in Oregon. EnerG2 of Seattle plans to build a facility in Albany for commercial- scale production of high-performance carbon electrode material for use in ultracapacitors, which some say are the key to lowering the cost of electric vehicles.
Batteries are designed to deliver power or energy," said Ted Bohn, a researcher with Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill. "If you were to optimize a battery purely for energy and use an ultracapacitor for power, it would be like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Both things are good on their own, but together they are awesome.

Nearly half of the $2.4 billion in federal grant money awarded Wednesday to stimulate the U.S. economy and boost the production of hybrid and electric vehicles went to six companies with ties to places as far away as Russia, China, South Korea and France.
President Obama announced the grants during a visit to Indiana and said the funds would create domestic jobs and instigate more "green" manufacturing in the United States. But because so few American companies have the necessary technology, much of the money will initially go toward manufacturing electric vehicle batteries overseas.

LONDON, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The credit crunch has hit global and European economies hard. The lack of available finances has affected investments and has been accompanied by a drop in consumer spending, rising unemployment and a decline in industrial output. As the major market for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is in the consumer, industrial and automotive end-user segments, demand has fallen, evidenced by the drop in revenues. However, the market is poised to rebound around end-2010 and, with the electric vehicle (EV) segment projected to explode in 2012-2013, the market is set for sustained expansion.
