A group opposing consolidation called for the resignation of Shelby County Election Commissioner Brian Stephens today because of his leadership role with Rebuild Government.
Stephens, who was named to the Election Commission a year ago, also serves as executive director of Rebuild Government, a group formed from city, business and community leaders to generate conversation about the consolidation question voters will consider Nov. 2.

The case was assigned to Judge Stacy L. Cook but a request was made by [George Sarantou]'s attorney for his case be assigned to a visiting judge [Sarantou v. Lucas County Board of Elections, et al. , Case No. CI0201008257].
Sarantou issued the following statement on the filing: "Based on initial research done by my political consultant, lawyers, as well as volunteers with my campaign and the Lucas County Republican party-and on limited information provided by the Lucas County Board of Elections-I have decided to file a Contest of Election on the issues surrounding provisional ballots cast in the commissioner's race in the November 2010 election.

El Paso County voters will choose a new clerk and recorder and new commissioners in two districts on Nov. 2. No incumbents are running because of term limits, although some of the candidates are vacating other elected posts. Here's a look at those races.

Polling places remain open
Shawnee County election commissioner Elizabeth Ensley says that although construction is taking place along S.E. 37th between S.E. Adams and S.E. California, two polling places in that area will be open and can be accessed by going around construction barriers Tuesday, which is Election Day.

Amy Lathen said Saturday that she will seek re-election to a second term as El Paso County's District 2 commissioner.
Lathen announced her plans for the 2012 election during a four- stop tour Saturday. She claimed endorsements including support from Sheriff Terry Maketa.

A single election commissioner can challenge county actions that allegedly impaired the equal representation of the major political parties in the staffing of a local board of elections.
This was the finding of the New York State Court of Appeals in the Matter of John A. Graziano v. County of Albany, et al. The petitioner filed a lawsuit asserting the county applied a hiring freeze that impaired board functions. In addition, the petitioner claimed the county delayed and interfered with board hiring decisions which resulted in a political imbalance in the staff of the board.

Lawrence County Commissioner Dan Vogler has announced that he is seeking re-election.
Vogler, 51, is seeking the Republican nomination in the May primary for his third term as commissioner. He formerly worked in a management position in the New Castle-based Penn Power company. He served for 12 years as a township supervisor in Neshannock.

Lucille L. Britt, the first woman Republican election commissioner in Niagara County, died Tuesday in Sisters Hospital, Buffalo. She was 71.
Mrs. Britt was born Lucille Lattimer in Barton. In 1958, she married Franklin J. Britt, who died in 2002. They moved to Gasport 45 years ago.
