By F.M. Wiggins PETERSBURG - The chairman of the city's Electoral Board removed election signs belonging to a City Council candidate last week in what was described by the official as a misunderstanding that was quickly rectified.
Somebody's marking swastikas on Santa Fe mayoral hopeful Asenath Kepler's campaign signs. Incumbent Mayor David Coss said Tuesday that he asked police to treat this vandalism as a hate crime.
At 7:01 p.m. Tuesday, one minute after polls close, Hilltop resident Jimmy Frost says he'll pull his Ford Windstar into the parking lot of the PetSmart on Laskin Road. The minivan's back seat will be removed. A flashing yellow light will be mounted on the roof. Frost will be wearing a bright orange safety vest. He'll scan the parking lot, hoping to see a few people who want to join his rogue mission.
The next 79 days in Evansville will bring all the trappings of a noisy, high-octane fall general election campaign - glad-handing candidates, yard signs, ads, door knockers and more. But the May 3 Democratic primary election to choose a nominee for mayor will be a different animal, and not just because of the springtime intensity.
Election season is upon us again, and a few weeks ago, the first campaign signs popped up in the New River Valley. In coming weeks these pages will be a forum for debate about issues and candidates leading up to Nov. 8. Today, however, some quick thoughts on early election-related matters. Campaign signs grow like weeds
Campaign lawn signs must be a hot commodity. Both Republican and Democratic mayoral campaigns report numerous signs disappearing over the past month. The Derby Democratic Town Committee is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the sign thief or thieves.

AS ELECTION Day approached, there was a giant sucking sound in southwest Pomona. Campaign signs went "whoosh" into a black hole by the hundreds. I must have lost over 400 or 500 signs," water board candidate Carlos Goytia told me. After the election, he said, "I only had to remove 25 or 30 of my signs.
PETERSBURG - In two days, residents of the city will head to the polls to decide on three contested City Council seats that could change the course of city government. The City Council campaign has been one of the most heated and controversial in recent history. It has been anything but dull. The campaign has featured a request for an injunction, an election official taking down campaign signs, a fine against one candidate and a political action committee that has flooded the race with money. And those are just the part of the campaign that has been fought in public.
