  • where we stand Mr. President, will this be a productive economic forum today, or a publicity-generating event to bolster your re- election campaign? Dear President Obama:

  • YAKIMA, WASH. -- The state Public Disclosure Commission will hear a complaint about election reporting stemming from last February's ballot measure to switch Yakima to a strong-mayor form of government. The complaint was filed by Ron Bonlender, a former City Council member and Democratic Party activist. He alleged the Safer Streets and Lower Taxes political action committee, which backed the strong- mayor proposal, filed late or unclear campaign reports to the PDC. He also questioned whether it was proper for strong-mayor proponent Bruce Smith to use advertising credit from his newspaper business to pay for campaign publicity.

  • According to media reports in late 2008 and early 2009, financial supporters of California's Proposition 8 - which successfully sought to overturn a state supreme court decision legalizing same-sex marriage - had been targeted for harassing phone calls and e-mails, threats, and vandalism of personal property after information about their donations had been spread across the Internet by Proposition 8 opponents. l The directors of the California Musical Theater in Sacramento and of the Los Angeles Film Festival both resigned after publicity about their financial support for Proposition 8 led to threats to boycott their organizations.2 Backers of Proposition 8 ultimately brought suit to have the names and addresses of their campaign donors taken off the Internet.3 The Proposition 8 allegat...

  • Last week's arrests of state Treasurer Robert Vigil and his predecessor, Michael Montoya, on federal charges of extortion have brought much public attention to the State Treasurer's Office -- which is one of those low-profile state agencies you don't hear about unless something goes hideously wrong. Although it's an elected office, during a typical election year the campaign for treasurer doesn't get a fraction of the publicity of the governor's race -- or, most of the time, even the campaigns for state attorney general.

  • Honor Flight would put extra funds to good use I read with interest that former congressman Chris Lee is returning donations from his campaign to the donors who helped support his re-election campaign. While in office in October 2010, Lee met with a group of World War II veterans in Washington, D.C., visiting the World War II Memorial dedicated to their service. Our organization, Honor Flight Buffalo, has provided this trip free of charge and transported 52 of these heroes in June and September 2010, with 54 more slated to visit their memorial in May and June and hopefully 50 to 100 more this fall. We do not provide these trips for publicity, but rather to honor our veterans.

  • I've been amazed at the media blitz Intermountain Health Care has launched to tell the public how wonderful they are. Their publicity campaign reminds of the type of advertising politicians do during an election year. Every time I turn on the radio, pick up a newspaper or watch television, I am bombarded with IHC ads. Do those at IHC really believe that dedicated compassionate health care providers are unique to their organization? I know many great people who work for IHC; however, I know just as many who work for non-IHC health care organizations in the state. It makes me wonder if the legislative study looking into IHC business practices in Utah is not going well. I hope that those at IHC are not trying to sway what should be an objective study of their organization. Jay Jordan
