While scholars disagree about whether and how much campaigns persuade voters, they increasingly agree that campaigns inform voters about the candidates and help voters bring their votes in line with their interests. Some argue that campaigns serve mostly to help voters bring their chokes in line with preexisting political predispositions. This paper examines the crystallization of voter preferences during the 2008 presidential election campaign. The authors rely on polls from each month of the election year campaign to assess whether and how the structure of vote choice changed. The results show that certain election day predictors of the vote-especially party identification-became increasingly important predictors of preferences during the election cycle. Even the increase in party eff...
With Super Tuesday in the rearview mirror, and the state's Feb. 19 primary on the horizon, the remaining presidential contenders are putting staffers on the road to Wisconsin. In the race to build a campaign structure in the state, observers said, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney have had a head start on their rivals.
Allentown, Pa. -- Although he will eagerly vote in the Pennsylvania primary, engineer Greg Marken admitted that he gets "totally sick" of the Democrats' endless race for president. If I hear NPR talk about it one more time, I'm going to break the radio," he said.
Female voters have turned their backs on President Obama in droves, a development that Democrats vow to reverse as Mr. Obama gears up his re-election campaign. In 2008, women helped deliver the presidency to Mr. Obama, voting for the Democrat 56 percent to 43 percent over Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican. Men split their votes between the two candidates almost evenly.
La Crosse -- Self-described underdog John McCain wrapped up a two- day Wisconsin campaign swing Friday by questioning the truthfulness of his opponent and the wisdom of political pundits now predicting his defeat. How many times, my friends, have the pundits written off the McCain campaign? We're going to fool 'em again!" the Republican told several thousand cheering supporters before accusing Democrat Barack Obama of dodging questions about his record.
The presidential candidates meet for their second debate tonight in a race that has swiftly exploded into mutual derision, recriminations and character attacks. In a few short days, the two campaigns have taken the 2008 election in a markedly nastier and more personal direction, playing cards they've apparently been saving for use as needed late in the contest.
Washington -- When you're the 38th state to vote, your presidential primary is not supposed to matter. But the same frantic calendar that threatened to marginalize Wisconsin's Feb. 19 contest now may inflate it beyond anything the state has seen in decades.
As the Democratic presidential contenders tangled Monday over whether to debate in Wisconsin, Republican Mike Huckabee sent a sharp message to John McCain by scheduling three days of campaigning in the state. With action picking up on both sides of the ballot, Monday might go down as the calm before the political storm. Of the candidates and surrogates, only former first daughter Chelsea Clinton was in the state, opening two days of college campus visits.
