  • Jazz Eldar Djangirov, "Three Stories: Solo Piano" (Sony Masterworks); Hiromi, "Voice: The Trio Project" featuring Anthony Jackson and Simon Philips (Telarc). Here are two astounding jazz piano virtuosos with musical worlds in common. Both like to go by only one name -- Russian Eldar only recently added Djangirov to a disc title and Japanese Hiromi's last name Uehara is certainly no secret though she'd rather avoid it. Both are young -- Eldar is 24 and Hiromi is 32. Both are monstrously able and as conversant with classical music as jazz (Eldar's arrangement of a Bach Prelude is, in its way, as pyrotechnic as Tatum but without Tatum's occasional excruciating bad taste when he ventured into classical territory; Hiromi takes on the sublime slow movement of Beethoven's Pathetique...

  • The Topeka Jazz Workshop Inc. Concert Series' guest list for a concert by Grammy Award-nominated pianist Eldar Djangirov has grown since the season was announced. Originally, a bonus performance in the 43rd annual edition of the nation's longest-running community jazz series, TJW Inc. officials decided to stage it at White Concert Hall and let the Topeka Symphony Orchestra offer the program as a free bonus to its season subscribers.

  • When Eldar Djangirov performs, sometimes the notes cascade so fast from his piano that a listener has a hard time keeping up. And when the veteran jazz virtuoso, who uses only his first name professionally, does a press interview, sometimes a reporter has similar difficulties.

  • Eldar Djangirov, the gifted 24-year-old pianist rightly hailed as a jazz wunderkind at age 9, has now staked an interesting terrain that defies simple categorization. Is he playing jazz? Maybe, maybe not? What is not in dispute is his talent and the extraordinary training that has evolved into a razor-sharp technique recalling the virtuosity of Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson in jazz, and Arthur Rubinstein and Glenn Gould in classical.

  • Jazz pianist performs Grammy Award-nominated jazz pianist Eldar Djangirov returns to Topeka, where he performed as a tween prodigy, to play what will be a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in White Concert Hall. Originally, a bonus concert in this season's Topeka Jazz Workshop Inc. Concert Series, the program has been opened to the public instead of just TJW Inc. season ticket holders and Topeka Symphony Orchestra season subscribers. A section of the auditorium will be reserved for TJW Inc. members and their guests, but the rest of the hall will be available to the public.

  • Russian-born pianist Djangirov has already released four albums (two on the Sony Classical label), and he just turned 19.

  • Don't be surprised if you find that Eldar Djangirov's music is far from typical -- it should be, considering that he's no ordinary jazz musician. The 21-year-old pianist, who usually goes by his first name only, makes his first Dayton appearance this Thursday, Nov. 13, at Gilly's, and he's hoping that his music will make a lasting impression on listeners here. Djangirov is a prodigious pianist and composer. Experience, seasoning, and maturity are values that many admire in a jazz musician, but Djangirov was noted for his strong musicianship when he made his national radio debut at age 11. Since then he has recorded five albums, receiving a Grammy nomination for his most recent release, "Re-Imagination" (Sony Classical, 2007).

  • SUBMITTED Now 18 years old, Eldar Djangirov returns to perform at the Topeka Jazz Festival where he first played at age 12.

  • Last year, the Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival introduced Utah audiences to 16-year-old pianist Eldar Djangirov. And the audience was captivated by his performances in the lobby of the Grand America Hotel. Djangirov, now 17, will be making a return engagement to this year's Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival. And event director Jerry Floor is elated. "Eldar was amazing last year," said Floor. "People need to keep an eye on him. He's destined for greatness.
