How do individuals with strong grudgeholding and avoidance attitudes react to counterattitudinal information that is factual and objective and comes from credible sources? Using the elaboration likelihood model, social judgment theory and the characterization-correction model (Ahluwalia 2000), this article discusses the rationale and proposes a framework behind a change in grudgeholding and avoidance attitudes of individuals. The reduction in grudgeholding and avoidance attitudes of individuals over time, when individuals are exposed to factual and objective counterattitudinal information from credible sources, is modeled as a finite markov chain.

When it comes to courtroom drama, a plaintiff often has the upper hand. A heartfelt plaintiff's story allows the jurors to eagerly exercise their ability to right a wrong. An evil villain harmed an innocent, or at least undeserving, victim and escaped without penalty; that is, the villain escaped until justice was placed in the hands of good citizens who are empowered to correct the injustice using the defendant's pocketbook. Defendants, on the other hand, are faced with the daunting prospect of giving jurors a sense of closure through inaction. As a result, defendants end up arguing that no amends are needed because justice was already served. This article explores the ways that jurors process witness testimony, including the factors that help determine what information they retain and...

Two experiments explored the effects of photographs on ethical decision making in the journalism domain. Both found that photographs improved participants' ethical reasoning and identified mental elaboration as significant in that process: thinking about the people affected by an ethical situation helped improve ethical reasoning. Involvement also was important; when participants were not very involved with the dilemmas, having photographs significantly improved their ethical reasoning. Theoretical explanations for why and how this occurs are offered, building upon moral development theory.

This study investigated the relationship between college males' self-reported gender role conflict (GRC) and their perceptions of their peers' GRC. A social norms intervention involving GRC was also tested. Ninety-seven college students completed the Gender Role Conflict Scale (GRCS), a self-report measure, and a modified GRCS that assessed perceptions of peer GRC. The men in the sample significantly overestimated normative GRC in three of the four factors and the GRCS as a whole. Additionally, participants in the intervention more accurately estimated peer GRC and reported lower restrictive emotionality at follow-up. These results support social norms theory and replicate earlier findings. Recommendations are offered for further investigation of the social norms method regarding gender...

Counter-experiential marketing communication refers to a marketing message that runs contrary to what a customer has actually experienced through product or service use. The impact of counter-experiential communications on consumers, as measured by levels of customer satisfaction and repurchase intention, is analyzed through an empirical study. It is demonstrated that after a negative experience, a positive message about the product leads to lower levels of satisfaction and repurchase intention as compared to when that negative experience is followed by a more neutral message. Recommendations are offered to best prevent the detrimental effects of de facto counter-experiential advertising in the face of negative consumption experiences. Direction for future research in this area is provi...
