[Yo-Yo Ma]'s passion obviously lies in world music: In addition to the Silk Roads Project he earned a 2003 Grammy for Obrigado Brasil (Sony), his collaboration with top Latin artists such as Sergio and Odair Assad, Egberto Gismonti, Paquito D'Rivera and Cesar Camargo Mariano. Yet at the Civic Center he seemed overjoyed to play [Edward Elgar]'s evergreen work. While English composers have a reputation for writing music that is emotionally conservative, Elgar's cello concerto treads a fine line of being English and being a very personal account of tragedy and love. You can hear the turmoil of the end of World War I in the regal chords that march forward in the first movement, to the tender love for Elgar's wife Alice, which resonates in the second movement, where the third movement revisi...

Meredith Monk, "Songs of Ascension" (ECM), and Various Artists Including Monk, "Pianos in the Kitchen -- From the Kitchen Archives No. 5" (Orange Mountain Music). So venerable is Meredith Monk as a performer of new music (and what might be classified in that dreadfully prosaic-sounding category "performance art"), that it's almost a dereliction of duty to review her on disc. Her works routinely involve dramatic placement and movement, art and dance so that the totality of experiencing a Monk work can't really be approached on disc. That, of course, doesn't mean that it can't be suggested brilliantly, because it can, full of drones, chants, whoops, yelps, percussion and vaguely medieval instrumental music. Kyle Gann -- a former pupil of Morton Feldman and veteran...

Mozart, Scott and Lara St. John, the Knights, Eric Jacobsen (Ancalagon). The liner notes to this CD are fascinating, seeking to tie together Mozart, the Catholic Knights of St. John, Scott and Lara St. John, the Freemasons of the 18th century and the contemporary orchestra known as the Knights and led by Eric Jacobsen. I enjoy stretches like this, though to say that the violin/viola equality in the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola reflects "the egalitarian spirit of the Masons" is, face it, silly. (It's funny how the Masons' importance in Mozart's life is always exaggerated while the Catholic Church's influence is downplayed.) Well, any excuse for another performance of that Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, one of civilization's most sublime achi...
