  • This article is concerned with how supply chain strategies can mitigate the Bullwhip Effect and inflated inventories from the perspective of the central firm (typically a manufacturer) in the supply chain. We first outline a base case scenario with a validated system dynamics simulation model, using supply chain characteristics as reported by a real firm, in this case a Mexican electronics supplier to U.S. automobile assemblers. We find, surprisingly, that a lower Bullwhip Effect Index (BE) does not always lead to lower costs in the supply chain studied. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis suggests some interesting, counter-intuitive results. The implications of these findings are further developed as we test how lead time reduction can also reduce the Bullwhip Effect in the simulated set...

  • The goal of this research is to examine how consumers' current and past brand-related behaviors affect their responses to nostalgic advertising. In general, the authors argue that nostalgia advertising influences consumers in different ways, depending upon their experiences with a brand. It is hypothesized that the effect of nostalgia is more pronounced for individuals who are current (frequent) users of a brand that was used during their childhood. The results of the current research support the prediction that nostalgia is intensely personal and that it works the best for current consumers who have lasting, personal attachments with the brand. The authors believe that these findings have practical implications for companies that are considering utilizing nostalgic themes in their comm...

  • Research on country-of-origin effect has been extensive. It is believed that consumers' product evaluations and purchase intentions may be influenced by their country image stereotypes. We argue that with the progress of globalization, people may change their country image stereotypes and increase multicultural competences. The country-of-origin effect may be influenced by such changes. This study aims to examine . Specifically, we developed a model to explicate the relationship between brand-of-origin image, product attributes, and perceived product quality, moderating by consumers' multicultural competence. We use need for cognitive closure as the indicator of multicultural competence. Using a 2X2 research desi...

  • Though numerous lab studies have shown that methyl iodide exposure kills fetuses in rabbits, the EPA's study, according to Ted Schettler, a toxicologist and co-author of several books, including Generations at Risk: Reproductive Health and the Environment, focuses mainly on methyl iodide's effect on the thyroid, given the well-known role that iodine plays in thyroid function. "There are at least four other mechanisms by which methyl iodide can damage a baby's brain other than its effect on the thyroid, and they haven't been studied," Schettler says. "It's a real deficiency in the data set. [The EPA has] no data on how this chemical would damage a developing fetus. They have the authority to call in this data, but they didn't. [Miguel Ramos] says that after the effects of the last appli...
