DETROIT - A former CEO and chairman of telecommunications giant AT&T Inc. will lead General Motors Corp.'s board after the automaker emerges from bankruptcy protection, GM said. Edward Whitacre Jr., 67, eventually will replace Kent Kresa, who will remain GM's interim chairman until the reorganized automaker emerges as a new company that's majority-owned by the U.S. government.

DETROIT -- Edward Whitacre Jr. says the main reason he's taking over as permanent CEO of General Motors Co. is to bring stability to the top of the troubled automaker. Whitacre, 68, whose appointment was announced Monday, said although he's satisfied with the leadership team he's put in place, there's still work to do in sales and marketing, product development, purchasing and quality. Management experts say that means further changes and possibly more firings. GM's board asked Whitacre to stay on as CEO after seven weeks of searching for a successor from the outside. Whitacre, a former CEO of AT&T Inc., doesn't expect any more big shake-ups, but said he plans to rearrange middle management, which totals about 23,000 people, mainly in the U.S.
MILWAUKEE - Looking to regain consumers' trust, General Motors Co. said Thursday that new car buyers will be able to return their vehicles within two months of purchase for a full refund, part of a long-awaited new marketing campaign for the biggest American automaker. The effort will begin next week, seeking to make connections again with American consumers who may be leery of the company since it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year. Chairman Edward Whitacre Jr. will appear in the initial burst of ads, telling consumers in a folksy, Texan accent he too had doubts about GM when he joined on this summer. But he likes the cars he found, and consumers should too.
