A state commission will make a $20,000 donation to the Shelby County Veterans Court, one of only two such courts in Tennessee devoted solely to helping former service personnel deal with legal problems.
The Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education & Specialization also is donating a similar amount to the Montgomery County Veterans Court and another $60,000 to encourage education, training and administrative support for courts and dockets to address the needs of veterans. The grants were announced Monday.

Kloster said that in recent years Scocos and other state officials helped the fund's finances by cutting administrative costs and spending on education grants, as well as ending health-care grants to veterans for items the federal government was already covering.

The Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program provides grants to institutions of higher education, public and private agencies and organizations, community-based organization with experience in serving disadvantaged youth, combinations of such institutions, agencies and organizations, and secondary schools. The VUB program provides grants to projects designed to prepare, motivate and assist military veterans in the development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in a program of postsecondary education.

Applications are being solicited for the Tibor and Anna Doby Veteran Support Fund at the Maine Community Foundation. Grants of up to $25,000 will be made to help organizations deliver programs and services to veterans and their families living in rural regions of Maine. Proposals must be submitted by May 15. Guidelines are available at mainecf.org. Last year, the fund gave $118,907 in grants to seven Maine agencies working to support rural veterans and their families.
