Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli continued his assault on federal government bureaucracies Wednesday, this time in defense of Virginia Tech's response to the April 16, 2007, shootings. In a scathing statement delivered by conference call from Richmond, Cuccinelli called the U.S. Department of Education's investigation of Tech for Clery Act violations "shoddy" and "appalling.
University of Southern Indiana President Linda L. M. Bennett announced today organizational changes for three academic departments, effective July 1. The departments of Teacher Education and Physical Education will be integrated into the Pott College of Science and Engineering, and the Social Work Department will become part of the College of Liberal Arts. The departments will not physically move, nor will students see any immediate changes in their academic programs or services.
Dr. Gaes' paper did an excellent job of summing up this body of research and putting it into perspective. Since the Roundtable in 2008, Dr. Gaes revisited and expanded his paper which is readily accessible on the web site for the Roundtable at the Urban Institute (See: www.urban.org, and search "reentry roundtable, education").
The fraudulent behavior uncovered during the audit is varied: schools were forced to buy materials the program's administrators preferred; some of those manufacturers had financial ties to the program's advisors. Conflicts of interest were ignored and certain aspects of the law were 'downplayed' when administrators weren't particularly fond of them. No matter how big or small the infraction, it's appalling to think that the education of America's children rested in the hands of people whose sole focus seemed to be on lining the pockets of their elite friends.
First, a new partnership agreement is in place with the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), Division of Offender Workforce Development, to identify and disseminate information related to some Department of Education funded Life Skills for State and Local Inmates Program projects. Finally, evaluation specialists at Virginia Tech have agreed to help the Department assist State correctional education programs In understanding how to access and utilize post release offender data to evaluate institutionally based education programs.
