  • As to all the hoopla focused on Colorado's application for Race To The Top (RTTT) today, let it be clear that not all members of the Colorado State Board of Education are in support of this submission. First, let me point out that under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), which is still the law of the land today, there is a prohibition against creating a national testing system, a prohibition against creating a huge national database, and a prohibition against creating national standards. So they're using stimulus funds for RTTT to wire around the clear intent of what Congress has said, which is in violation of NCLB. Using the ARRA (American Reinvestment and Recovery Funds), which will put future generations in debt with money that is yet to be printed, is not a solution for solving th...

  • The Utah State Legislature should slash the budgets of other state departments as much as possible before even thinking of cutting the education budget. Utah already has the highest student- teacher ratio in the United States, some of the lowest teacher salaries, and we spend the least amount per student. Cutting the education budget would be like blowing up a building that's already condemned and slated for demolition.

  • As chief of staff for the Oklahoma State Department of Education, A. Lealon Taylor is responsible for a $3.3 billion budget and oversees the department's day-to-day operations. During Taylor's time as chief of staff, the department has decreased the number of employees and the administrative budget, while also being recognized by the Education Commission of the United States as being the top department of education in the country in terms of implementing reform mandates in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Health of Average Household Budget Declines For Six Consecutive Quarters ATLANTA, Feb. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- CredAbility, one of the leading nonprofit credit counseling and education agencies in the United States, today released the CredAbility Consumer Distress Index results for the 2010 fourth quarter. The Index, a quarterly measure that tracks the financial condition of the average U.S. household, found that rising stock prices helped propel growth in consumers' net worth. But lower scores in three of the index's other four categories -- employment, housing and household budget - drove down the overall index. The health of household budgets declined each quarter in 2010 and is at the lowest level since the first quarter of 2009.

  • NEW YORK - It is now well understood that one of the crucial drivers of the crises in the Middle East is the discontent of its youth. Arab countries have been unable or unwilling to provide jobs, education, opportunity and rights for their young and so, finally, they revolted. Is there any lesson in this story for the United States? Not directly; there is no analogy between Middle Eastern dictatorships and American democracy. But if the troubles of Arab youth make us shine a light on the state of America's youth, the picture that emerges is grim. As countries get rich, you might assume that they focus greater attention on their children. Not in the United States. The federal government's expenditures on children have shrunk as a share of the budget over the past 30 years. In 1960, about...

  • We are a nation of immigrants. Nearly every man, woman and child who has lived in the United States had ancestors who traveled thousands of miles to achieve what we now call the American Dream. It is our immigrants who have made our nation great, who built the foundation upon which America has risen to become the preeminent democratic and economic power on earth. And today we risk leaving immigrants behind. The demographics of our cities, and our entire country, are changing. The U.S. Census just announced that racial minorities made up roughly 85 percent of the nation's population growth over the last decade. In our congressional district, adult education schools - which provide ESL and civics education classes - are facing severe cuts in funding. And many of these schools already lack...
