A massive show of public support at a Town Council meeting kept the governing body from making further cuts to the town's education budget, but the general government portion of the proposed 2008- 09 spending plan suffered a different fate.
The council voted 6-3 to cut $600,000 from the $56.29 million general government portion of the budget proposed by Mayor William Dickinson Jr. The council's five Democrats and Republican John LeTourneau voted for the cut, while GOP council members Robert Parisi, Rosemary Rascati and Jerry Farrell Jr. were against it.

Education leaders are slowly losing faith that teachers will see any of a $20 million, merit-pay package approved by the 2008 Legislature.
In preparation for looming budget cuts, the State Board of Education plans next Tuesday to consider a delay in distributing the money.

Almost all states propose to spend less this year than in 2008, despite increased demand for public services. A majority propose deep cuts to education and health care spending, programs that cover the bulk of state expenditures. Meanwhile, a number of governors propose significant tax cuts for corporations for the ostensible purpose of "job creation" - even though such measures are of dubious value and push state and local budgets even further into the red. Fiscal reserves have been depleted in most states, and only a handful of governors propose to raise taxes or raise new revenues in any significant way. The economic implications of this drive to austerity should be clear to any minimally informed observer. As the CBPP puts it, "When states cut spending, they lay off employees, cance...

BALTIMORE, Aug. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Keeping Maryland on a steady diet of service cuts, without raising any revenues is not healthy for our future. A new report by the Maryland Budget & Tax Policy Institute outlines several revenue options that would solve the state's $1.1 billion shortfall for Fiscal Year 2013, which begins on July 1st 2012. To date, Maryland's primary response to the economic crisis has been to dramatically reduce state government spending. Since 2008, the state has cut $5 billion. These cuts have affected health services, education at all levels, roads and nearly every other public function.
Like other states, Maryland still suffers from the lingering effects of the worst national recession on record. School class sizes are increasing as school district...

I have been an activist fighting for better access in CUNY since 2008" declared Ateo Bracero, president of the Black Student Union at Lehman College. "My motivation is to fight for a free and open CUNY that serves the people. I decided to take on more of a role as a student organizer.
Frances Villar is executive vice president of the Lehman College Student Government. She would like CUNY students to understand that they have a right to higher education. "What is happening is privatization of public colleges," explained Villar. She is also one of the plaintiffs in the case. "When the banks and the corporations needed a bailout from the federal government, trillions of dollars were given to them. Where is the bailout for the students? Don't let them tell you the money is not there. This...

Industry funding of continuing medical education was flat in 2007 at around $1.2 billion, according to the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), and 2008 figures, due later this month, are likely to show a decline. CME providers say manufacturers are spending less on continuing education -- due in part to across-the-board budget cuts at drug and device makers. It's been an ugly few years for the CME industry. Pilloried by snooping pols and sniffing ethicists, not to mention budget cuts and the seismic policy changes handed down from the ACCME and other parties, CME providers and supporters feel besieged. Advances of recent years in the rules governing accredited providers -- and mandating a hands-off approach on content for supporters -- are seldom acknowledged...
