YAKIMA, Wash. -- The numbers are in. And at most school districts around the Yakima Valley, they're not as high as educators and administrators first feared. That's the good news.
The budget cuts to higher education in the state budget passed Tuesday night will likely bring more hardships to already struggling college students. The California State University is now facing $650million in cuts going into the 2011-12 school year, as is the University of California.

More than half of the $38 billion in spending cuts that lawmakers agreed to last week in the 2011 budget compromise that averted a government shutdown would hit education, labor and health programs. NORMAL - The state budget sent to the governor late Tuesday could have been worse for education, considering the state's financial condition, local school officials said Wednesday. While some areas were cut, others stayed the same or even saw some increases in funding, they noted.
Los Angeles Unified filed suit late Wednesday against Gov. Jerry Brown and other state officials, seeking to block budget cuts that would gut the district's transportation program for magnet and special-education students. The 22-page suit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, challenging efforts to withhold $117 million in home-to-school transportation funding over the next two years, including $38 million for the semester that begins in January.
