In Elia Kazan's debut film, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945) - a sanitized four-handkerchief adaptation of Betty Smith's bestseller about tenement life in turn-of-the-century Williamsburg - she is funny and engaging as man-hungry Aunt Sissy, although, unfortunately, what the actress called "the best scene I ever played" was cut to appease Production Code censors. Blondell exhibits a new mature beauty onscreen and reveals herself a dramatic actress of considerable strength in Edmund Goulding's remarkably moody Nightmare Alley (1947) - the noirish story of the rise and fall of a sideshow hustler who puts the moves on Blondell's blowsy fake telepath to learn her tricks.

It's easy to contemplate Errol Flynn as a centennial figure. After all, it was 1935 when he emerged as a heroically precocious movie star in one fell swoop, when cast as the title character of "Captain Blood," a gallant physician-turned-buccaneer.
Born in Hobart, Tasmania, on June 20, 1909, Mr. Flynn had appeared in only four previous films, one an obscure production made in his native Australia and the others minor titles from America's Warner Bros., that thought him photogenic and promising enough to be hired as a prospect.

One summer when Gil Cates was in college at Syracuse University, he worked at a carnival guessing weights and ages.
But sitting in his office at the Geffen Playhouse, the veteran producer-director says he doesn't have a read on how audiences will take to "Nightmare Alley," the new musical now in previews. It opens Wednesday night.

The fizz on the soda
Joan Blondell has always reminded me of a bubble bath -- warm, safe, sensual, and playful. The screen actress relied on a sense of playfulness and genuine acting talent to make a career for herself in nearly 100 films from the early 1930s through the late 1970s. There are a few memorable titles -- 1933's Footlight Parade, 1945's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and 1947's Nightmare Alley -- but don't feel bad if you can't think of the names of her other movies. Blondell couldn't either. "None of the pictures stand out," she said late in her career. "I can tell you where I lived at the time, who I was in love with, but I can't tell you about a picture.

By a curious historical coincidence, the nominees for the second annual Academy Awards, which covered features released between August 1928 and July 1929, were announced the day after the stock market crash.
Considering that "The Broadway Melody," the first musical (and first talking picture) completed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, was destined to win as best movie, a plausible case could have been made for hastening awards night, held a leisurely six months later, and spreading a timely bit of cheer.
