  • WASHINGTON - Steve Scauzillo, opinion pages editor for this newspaper, has been named the 13th winner of the Aldo Leopold Award for Distinguished Editorial Writing. The Wilderness Society presents the award annually to an editorial writer who has produced editorials that strongly advocate protection of America's remaining wildlands. The honor is named for the author of "A Sand County Almanac," one of the seminal works in the literature of conservation. Leopold, who wrote a number of influential books and essays, was a founder of The Wilderness Society in 1935.

  • Former dean Cleghorn dies Reese Cleghorn, who built the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism into a nationally prominent program during his tenure as dean, died Monday. He was 78. Cleghorn was dean of the journalism school from 1981 to 2000 and had taught courses in commentary and editorial writing until December. Cleghorn was associate editor of the Detroit Free Press when he was named dean at Maryland. He was instrumental in bringing the national monthly magazine American Journalism Review (then Washington Journalism Review) to the college in 1987, and has since served as president, and then publisher of AJR.

  • CHEYENNE - The Wyoming Tribune Eagle was presented with 25 total awards, including 10 first-place honors, during the annual Wyoming Press Association convention here Friday and Saturday. The newspaper won first place in Editorial Excellence for the second consecutive year for its strong editorial writing and positions on issues. The WTE also placed first in typographical excellence.
