All my life, dating back to my upbringing in the pre-Civil Rights- era South, the Democratic Party was presumed to be the natural home of black Americans. The presumption worked both ways: The party's mostly white leaders have expected blacks to vote for their candidates, and blacks have responded by doing just that, overwhelmingly, in all regions of the country including in Colorado.
Yet, if you look at the history of the two major political parties alongside the history of black people in the United States, blacks' long-standing loyalty to the Democratic Party doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It is remarkable, in this day and age, that there still are people who tell me I should have voted for Barack Obama in 2008 - simply because we are each black.
Without a trace of embarrassment, they call me a traitor because I voted for the white Republican instead. And their jaws drop in disbelief when they learn that I did so even though I grew up in the segregated South - pre-Civil Rights Era Mississippi - where I endured whites-only drinking fountains, rest rooms and schools.
