ABUJA, Nigeria--Liberia has asked Nigeria to hand over former President Charles Taylor, who is living there in exile and wanted on war crimes charges for his role in Sierra Leone's civil war, the government said March 17. Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who helped arrange the one-time warlord's asylum to help end Liberia's civil war, is consulting with leaders from the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, which helped broker Taylor's exile, on how to respond, the president's office said. It was not immediately clear who could take custody of Taylor--Liberia or the U.N.-backed Sierra Leone war crimes court, which has indicted him on charges of crimes against humanity for supporting that country's rebel movement.
