Missouri has one of the highest surpluses of lawyers in the nation, a new study has found. Overall, Missouri ranks 10th in a list of states where the number of lawyers exceeds the number of lawyer job openings, according to an analysis by Economic Modeling Specialists Inc., or EMSI. While 943 people passed Missouri's bar exam in 2009, the state has about 362 lawyer job openings annually, leaving a surplus of 581 lawyers, according to the EMSI data.
As Genesee Community College prepares for its 44th academic year and a new high in enrollment, a recent study shows it continues to grow as a key economic factor in the area. The new study by Economic Modeling Specialists, a Rochester research firm, estimates the college's impact on its four-county service area as $126 million a year, fueled by record annual enrollment -- 7,300 full- and part-time students last year and high numbers for two sessions this summer.
It's no secret that law schools are churning out more lawyers than the country needs. Still, when you actually crunch the numbers, as economic consulting firm Economic Modeling Specialists Inc. did, the results are sobering. On average, the number of people who passed the bar exam in 2009 was twice the estimated number of legal job openings.
More than 1 million American jobs could be lost as a result of defense budget cuts if the deficit reduction committee fails to reach agreement on alternative balanced budget solutions, and total cuts to defense reach $1 trillion. The study, done by Stephen Fuller, director of regional analysis at George Mason University and Economic Modeling Specialists Inc. shows "bleak outcome" for both the defense industry and the economy as a whole.

According to the report, median starting salaries fell 13 percent, mean salaries fell 10 percent and beginning private practice salaries fell by 20 percent.
