We present new evidence from a natural experiment to show circumstances in which ownership restrictions can enhance value. Our evidence is based on multiple restricted bond issues by an emerging market issuer at 150 basis points lower than comparable bonds, resulting in a billion dollars saving. This is intriguing: how can an emerging market issuer with junk bond ratings obtain such low yields? We argue ownership restrictions enhance value since they enable an issuer to precommit to renegotiate efficiently with a favored clientele in the potential default states, thereby circumventing deadweight costs of prolonged negotiations, particularly when the restricted clientele also values the underlying collateral higher than other investors. Ownership restrictions can also result in a transfe...

India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. To keep pace with this growth, India's educational infrastructure must produce an ever increasing number of high-skilled graduates. This study was conducted to obtain insights about motivation and learning styles of Indian students majoring in business. A key issue in this study is an assessment of the role of the teacher (lecturer) in influencing the motivation/learning styles of their students. Business students are motivated by faculty members who encourage active participation, seek their opinions and provide ample opportunities for expressing their thoughts. Students are also seeking faculty who are well versed in their fields who come to class with a sense of energy and enthusiasm. Faculty members should change their teac...

The most acute phase of the global economic crisis appears to have passed. Output growth has resumed in most parts of the world. It appears, however, that the upturn in advanced economies will only be moderate and that the economies of many countries will be marked by considerable spare output capacity and high unemployment ahead. The crisis has given rise to new imbalances that will dampen the recovery. Weak prospects have contributed to a marked decline in interest rate expectations in many countries. New information suggests that the recovery in the Norwegian economy is continuing, but that capacity utilization is probably somewhat lower than anticipated in autumn 2009. Monetary policy cannot fine-tune developments in the economy, but it can mitigate the most severe effects when the ...

As Vietnam emerges into world markets, Vietnamese organizations are facing the predicament of how to avoid the low-cost labor trap and move up the production value-chain by improving quality and productivity. Continuous improvement (CI) practices have proved fundamental to building and sustaining competitive advantage in other Asian countries such as Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia. If Vietnamese organizations are to pursue higher value-added activities, CI will be critical for them, too. Despite the tremendous interest in Vietnam from the international business community, little research on Vietnamese management practices has been done, particularly on the use of CI techniques. The language barrier, lack of reliable business data, and the culture of government and corporate secrecy in V...
