Prime Minister of Barbados David Thompson has Indicated that he is for a policy of 'Barbados first'.
Thompson, who came to power in last January's general elections in Barbados, also expressed confidence that the Caribbean will be able to weather the current global economic storm and that it would be able to turn 'adversity into opportunity".
There is in fact no other way. The strategies for growth and development in the Caribbean Community have at their core the deepening of economic integration and functional cooperation as the sub region's most effective response to the challenges of trade liberalisation and economic globalisation," he said.

WASHINGTON, March 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Inter-American Economic Council recently led a fact finding Mission by Members of the House Congressional Caribbean Caucus to the St. Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda. In a press conference in Washington, DC, Council President Barry S. Venezuela President Hugo Chavez has introduced a bevy of energy proposals over the past months aimed at uniting a region where historical rivalries and economic necessity often trump sound long-term foreign policy. At a June summit of Caribbean leaders in Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela, Chavez proposed the formation of PetroCaribe, "a body aimed at facilitating the development of energy policies and plans for the integration of the nations of the Caribbean.

[Owen Arthur]'s Labor Party has not traditionally done well in St. John, but it has nevertheless thrown candidate Hudson Griffith into the race against [David Thompson], a mother of three, Arthur said he did not believe there was any greater affront to "Barbadian democracy and to Barbadian womanhood" than to have her run as the area candidate. There is no Barbadian woman who could be the wife of a St. Lucian politician that could dare run in St. Lucia on the grounds that she is running to be the queen of St. Lucia, and if it cannot happen there, why can it happen here? It is an insult and an affront to democracy. Why is it that, that which is totally unacceptable to everybody else in the Caribbean must now be foisted upon us?" Arthur said, stirring a controversy that now involves his fo...

The question on economic development has long been on the minds of Caribbean leaders. Their small island states face significant hindrances to development, including modest populations, limited expanses of viable land, and insufficient capital flow. Heads of state have turned to integration of the region's markets to increase investment and improve competitiveness. In Jul 2001, members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) prepared for an increasingly competitive global marketplace. The liberalization of trade in goods and services within the region will expand the resource base and increase the potential consumer market, making more businesses regionally sustainable. Whether free trade and the pressure of global competition will be good for the Caribbean in the long run remains to be se...
