Success often starts small, but West Virginia's success in landing new investments by Japanese companies started big - with Wheeling Nisshin in 1986, NGK Sparkplugs in 1995, and then Toyota's $400 million automotive facility in 1996.
When I first met with Toyota officials a decade earlier, my hope was that starting those conversations would lead to even more growth for our state. And thanks in no small part to our talented workforce, the good news only continues.

The City Council, with the blessing of Mayor Ray Nagin, has given its OK to the structure of a public private partnership for economic development.
But how soon the PPP, its staff and board can work toward its mission of attracting and retaining business is unknown. The time line rests in the hands of the Internal Revenue Service, which must approve the documents that establish the partnership as a nonprofit.

LINCOLN - Lincoln and Logan County Development Partnership director Joel Smiley believes any economic development that comes to Central Illinois is good for Logan County, even if significant proposed projects are not destined for Logan County.
Logan County residents may find jobs or construction materials may be bought here, even if the new factory or business isn't locating here," Smiley said. "Or people may relocate to Logan County or spend their money here. We need to take a regional look at economic development, and not just specifically in our county. Most people know about the hardships the three major automotive manufacturers in this country are facing, but many may not be aware of a St. Louis regional economic development force moving behind the scenes to encourage and support automotive manufacturers and suppliers.
The St. Louis Regional Automotive Partnership grew out of the concept of the Ford Task Force, which was formed by a group of St. Louis County officials to help relocate workers from the Ford Motor Co., which was in the process of closing its Hazelwood plant.

On the day the New Orleans City Council announced its nominees for a new economic development board, Mayor Ray Nagin had his own announcement: The board's creation will be indefinitely suspended.
Nagin said Thursday that there is not enough racial and gender diversity among board nominees. He cited a report from the International Economic Development Council expressing concern about the board selection process. The IEDC helped the administration and council craft an ordinance creating a public-private economic development partnership.
