The Memphis and Shelby County mayors have nominated merger and acquisitions attorney Al Bright Jr. to lead the influential EDGE board. He'll fill one of the four seats left vacant since the original 11 nominees were announced April 15.

On the day the City Council announced its nominees for a new economic development board, Mayor Ray Nagin has his own announcement: The board's creation will be indefinitely suspended. Nagin said there is not enough racial and gender diversity among board nominees. Nagin also cited a report from the International Economic Development Council, which Nagin said is concerned about the board selection process. IEDC's report said board nominees are not diverse enough, do not adequately represent the city's 12 industries and lack industry experience, Nagin said. According to the Nagin administration, the report IEDC found that only four nominees were women, 30 percent of the nominees were black and less than 20 percent were Asian or Hispanic.

RUMFORD -- Selectmen altered three of five of their 2011-12 municipal budget recommendations Thursday night prior to their regular board meeting. Chairman Brad Adley said the board voted 4-0 to change its recommendation of no money to $25,000 for Economic Development after learning that new development prospects now loom.
RUMFORD -- There will be a special Board of Selectmen meeting at 4 p.m. Monday, April 4, in the Conference Room at the municipal building. Town Manager Carlo Puiia said Tuesday that after Chairman Brad Adley opens the meeting, the board will enter an executive session to discuss an economic development matter.
