Malaysia can easily benefit economically from increased US-China competition over the Pacific, if it plays its cards right.
The United States made a big splash in the Pacific in November, with a flurry of diplomatic announcements from Washington and its allies that signal increased competition with China over Asia. Highlights included an increased US military presence in Australia, closer ties between the US and Myanmar, and stepped-up Japanese military cooperation with India, Vietnam and Indonesia. On the trade front, participants in the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation forum agreed upon a framework for the Trans- Pacific Partnership (TPP), a free-trade zone incorporating nine countries, with the US in, and China out.
