We must go forward with a clear vision. In the cold war, we laid out a vision of liberty and trusted its power to transform societies. And that transformation took place in ways almost no one could foresee. In the late 1970s, for example, many in the West worried we were losing. And then one October afternoon, there came a sign as bright as the white smoke above the Sistine Chapel. Onto the balcony of St.
Policymakers devote a great deal of attention to short-run fluctuations in the labor market. Central banks monitor indicators of labor market tightness in the conduct of monetary policy due to the potential implications for inflation. Fiscal authorities are concerned with the budget consequences of fluctuations in the labor market because they affect both revenues and expenditure programs. More generally, these fluctuations may be associated with significant losses in welfare. The motivations of this article stems from a striking empirical observation about long-run variations in labor market outcomes: Long-run changes in total hours of work in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries exceed the variation of hours worked over the business cycle in a representative...

PARIS - World governments must not let their focus on spending cuts keep them from creating jobs that will be a key part of economic recovery, an international group of experts warned on Monday. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the International Labor Organization say government support for the unemployed - both with subsidies and job training - is vital since long-term joblessness is particularly intractable.
Liberal pundits are alarmed that income inequality in the United States is higher than in Pakistan or Ethiopia and - as a recent Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development study shows - higher than at any time since the Great Depression. But should this be a cause for concern? If one cares about the welfare of the poorest and the most vulnerable, income inequality is not a useful measure. Measures of inequality tell us nothing about the living conditions of the poor, their health and their access to economic opportunity.
CHICAGO, June 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce Foundation today announced that it has undertaken a ground- breaking economic study of the Tri-State Chicago Metropolitan Region to be conducted by The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This is the first study of a U.S. metro area and will encompass a dynamic geographic and economic area that includes parts of southeast Wisconsin, northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area, creating a comprehensive understanding of how a more integrated economy will enhance the region's global competiveness. "This study will provide invaluable insight to the three states and encourage cross state participation, something that has been difficult to achieve," said Lance Pressl, President of the Chicagola...
Attached to the use of technology such as the personal computer and the Internet are concerns that these will reduce worker productivity given the distractions offered by these technologies. It also allows for service work to be transferred abroad to cheaper labor markets, thereby depressing an economy's economic output. These concerns are evaluated at the macroeconomic level using 1997 to 2004 estimates of computer availability and Internet users contained in the Yearbook of Statistics and standardized measures contained in the Penn World Tables. Our OLS estimates suggest that the availability of personal computers has little impact on a nation's growth in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and real GDP per worker. We do find, however, that growth in these two measures is pos...
