Independent natural gas driller East Resources Inc. of Marshall said Friday it is being acquired by multinational oil giant Royal Dutch Shell plc in a $4.7 billion cash deal -- the latest example of an oil giant buying its way into the natural gas boom in Pennsylvania and other states.
In other big deals recently, Atlas Energy Inc. of Moon signed a $1.7 billion joint venture in April with Reliance Industries Ltd., India's largest private company to develop natural gas properties. In December, Exxon Mobil Corp. announced it was acquiring XTO Energy Inc. and its extensive natural gas assets nationwide in a $41 billion deal.

WARRENDALE, Pa., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- East Resources, Inc., today released the following statement regarding the order issued by the Department of Agriculture to quarantine cattle on the Tioga County farm owned by Don and Carol Johnson in Shippen Township, Tioga County. East performed a hydraulic fracturing operation on a horizontal Marcellus shale gas well drilled on the farm that the Johnsons leased to East.
On May 2, the Department of Environmental Protection notified East Resources about a possible leak from a temporary water impoundment located at the Johnson 435-1H Well Site. The impoundment contained a mixture of fresh water and flowback water from a hydraulic fracturing operation on the well. Flowback water was first introduced into the impoundment on April 9.

Langin is in charge of Appalachian exploration for Royal Dutch Shell plc, which holds the mineral rights to about 100,000 acres in the two counties and more land in northern Pennsylvania. About a year ago, Shell bought East Resources Inc. of Marshall for nearly $5 billion, and the company just finished drilling its first well in this part of the state.
