Hoping for a better solution for the transfer of the Animas Conservancy's easements, the Colorado Conservation Trust gave La Plata $30,000 to do necessary legwork and financed a legal review of Animas' projects. In 2008, La Plata staff began visiting Animas' easements to meet landowners, check for violations and update files. The process uncovered potential problems with Animas Meanders. Most of the land is under a 1979 easement that allows the construction of three homes, and [Paul Sugnet] has cut that lot into three parcels, two of which he's sold to a partner. But 1978 neighborhood covenants limit division to two parcels, and the easement is unclear on whether the lot can be divided at all. BELFAST - After more than a year without much activity on the city's proposed rails and trails project, city councilors decided at Tuesday night's regular City Council meeting to get back on trackwith the pedestrian-friendly endeavor.
Last June, the council voted to purchase the three-mile railroad easement that runs along the Passagassawakeag River from the waterfront to the Waldo town line with the intention of one day creating a permanent public trail. However, City Manager Joe Slocum explained Wednesday that at least one of the abutting landowners is concerned that there is a national dispute regarding easements for rails and trails. The disagreement, essentially, is whether an easement for railroad activities would encompass the use of a trail, too, he said. This uncertainty could ...

PARIS -- The Parsons Farm Conservation Easement has been completed. Five years in the crafting, blending the desires and needs of three siblings, one cousin and their spouses, the easement will protect 230 acres of historic agricultural fields and woodlands in South Paris.
The easement, donated to the Western Foothills Land Trust by Cynthia and Lawrence Curtis, Jeffrey Parsons, Jerome Parsons and Margaret Weed, will protect a rare historic landscape from development and subdivision in perpetuity. The family's extraordinary 1803 brick-ended farmhouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, while excluded from the easement, will benefit from the protection of its agricultural setting.
