  • Haiti's ambassador to the U.S., Raymond Joseph, said from his Washington office that he spoke to President Rene Preval's chief of staff, Fritz Longchamp, just after the quake hit. He said Longchamp told him that "buildings were crumbling right and left" near the National Palace. The envoy said he had not been able to get back in contact with officials. The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 10 miles (15 kilometers) west of Portau-Prince at a depth of 5 miles (8 kilometers), the U.S. Geological Survey said. USGS geophysicist Kristin Marano called it the strongest earthquake since 1770 in what is now Haiti. In 1946, a magnitude 8.1 quake struck the Dominican Republic and also shook Haiti, producing a tsunami that killed 1,790 people. It's going to be a r...

  • Most of what has been written or said about Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's departure from the Likud party describes the, event as an "earthquake," or the "eruption of a volcano," and that has, without a doubt, turned the Israeli political map "topsy-turvy," to borrow a phrase from Ha'aretz writer Gideon Samet. While one can easily decipher the source of the upsurge in Sharon's reputation in the media as a rising "liberal politician" -- his decision to disengage from Gaza being the most obvious -- one cannot help but wonder whether Sharon's enthusiasts, who hurryingly registered his renewed commitment to the "road map" for peace in the region, were even aware of his concurrent decision to further expand three major illegal settlements in the occupied territories -- Maale Adumim, A...

  • Dear Sun Spots: I would like to know where the three or four volcanoes are in Maine and if there is a map on the earthquake lines in Maine? - No name, Durham. Answer: According to http://www.scarborough.k12.me.us/wis/ teachers/dtewhey/webquest/nature/volcanoes, ancient volcanic rocks are preserved in many parts of Maine, but there have not been any active volcanoes since the Mesozoic Era. An interesting aspect of Maine's bedrock is that it records a wide array of geologic environments that have been present. All three major rock types - igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic - are represented. During the protracted geologic history that has brought Maine to the current stage, the movement of continents by the mechanism of plate tectonics has caused the earth's surface to evolve. Volcanic ...
