WHITTIER - Incumbent Andre Quintero was leading in early election returns Tuesday in the race for three open seats on the Rio Hondo College board of trustees.
And the three school board incumbents for the Whittier Union High School District - Leighton Anderson, Jeff Baird and Alex Morales - also appeared to be headed for victory late Tuesday.

TEMPLE CITY -- Three incumbents led in early returns Tuesday night as city officials began tallying vote-by-mail ballots from the city's seven precincts.
Carl Blum, Cynthia Sternquist and Fernando Vizcarra led, with challenger Manuel Valenzuela closest behind them.

WHITTIER - City Council incumbents Bob Henderson and Greg Nordbak were leading two challengers by a nearly 2-1 margin with most absentee ballots counted Tuesday night.
Nordbak and Henderson were opposed by Alex Morales, 61, and Fred Hawthorne, 32. Morales spent 12 years on the Whittier Union High School District board. Hawthorne owns a personal training business in Whittier. Also in the race was write-in candidate Joe Marsico.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Preliminary election returns Monday showed Iraqi voters divided along ethnic and religious lines with a commanding lead held by the religious Shiite coalition that dominates the current government.
Meanwhile, an Iraqi lawyer said at least 24 top former officials in Saddam Hussein's regime were freed from jail without charges. They included biological and chemical weapons experts known as "Dr. Germ" and "Mrs. Anthrax.

Republican Jeff Gorell and Democrat Mike Gatto led in early election returns Tuesday night in contests for open seats in the Assembly as they sought to extend their parties' dominance in districts flanking the San Fernando Valley.
Gorell was ahead of Democratic fourth-time candidate Ferial Masry in the race to succeed Assemblywoman Audra Strickland, R-Westlake Village, who served the maximum three terms representing the 37th District.

With 13 of 19 precincts reporting, Tucker, a Republican, was leading seven-term former Alderwoman Phyllis J. Green by just 1 vote.

The defeat of a highly regarded Appellate Division justice in Tuesday's election has left some observers once again questioning whether state Supreme Court judges should be elected or appointed.
In a race with four candidates for two open seats Elma Ann Bellini (R,C,I) and Joanne Winslow (D,I) led Robert Lunn (R,C) and Paul Riordan (D) by a wide margin in early election returns. Judge Bellini received 233,887 votes and Winslow received 231,598, while Judge Lunn and Riordan trailed with 192,750 and 178,144 votes, respectively.

BALDWIN PARK - City Clerk Susan Rubio could be headed toward an upset win over incumbent Anthony Bejarano in early election returns Tuesday for the City Council election.
In the race for mayor, incumbent Mayor Manuel Lozano led against challenger and City Councilman Ricardo Pacheco, who will retain his seat if he loses.
