It has been four years since the United States and Colombia signed a reciprocal trade agreement. Unfortunately, the agreement has yet to be implemented. In June 2007, then-President George W. Bush sent the agreement to Congress but the Democratic majority in the House refused to vote on it. The new Republican Majority in the House must ensure a vote on this agreement, as it will create U.S. jobs and make good on a promise to an important ally. Passing the agreement would create U.S. jobs by eliminating tariffs on U.S. exports to Colombia. Tariff elimination would enable U.S. exporters to compete on a level playing field with exporters from countries such as Canada and those in the European Union whose products already enter Colombia duty-free because of their existing trade agreements. ...
Alcohol sales data provide a more accurate indication of alcohol consumption than alternative methods such as population surveys. This information can be used to better understand epidemiological issues related to alcohol consumption, policy development and evaluation. Official sales records were collected for the 28 regional districts of British Columbia (BC) for 2002-2005, while homemade alcohol was estimated from survey data. Alcohol consumption rates were found to vary across geographic regions, by season, and with population level demographics. Government stores were the largest source of alcohol consumption in BC, accounting for 45.1% of total alcohol consumption in 2004. The Oct. 17 Donn Esmonde article does not accurately portray the situation at the Peace Bridge and does not justify any further delays. While Liz Martina is portrayed as acting in the best interests of the neighborhood, she sued the Peace Bridge Authority to stop the border infrastructure improvements that relocated the tolls to Canada, reconfigured the U.S. plaza, relocated the Duty Free and resulted in improvements to Front Park. These changes have had positive benefits on the neighborhood and will ultimately allow for a new, smaller U.S. plaza.
