OPENING THIS WEEK
chiles BARNEY'S VERSION Scripted by Michael Konyves, Barney's Version is based on Canadian writer and journalist Mordecai Richler's memory novel of the same title. It is an unpredictable movie, which is very much in its favor, but it's also a film in need of tighter editing and stronger writing. Paul Giamatti is quite good in the title role (and recently won a Golden Globe for it), and the rest of the cast (including Dustin Hoffman, Minnie Driver, and Rosamund Pike) provide lively support. At times it's subversively funny, but it's darkly disturbing at other moments. Rated R. 132 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Robert Nott) See review, Page 44.

LITTLE FOCKERS (2010, Universal, PG-13, $30) -- The good news first: Owen Wilson is hilarious as a hippie investment banker who zips around town in a hybrid sports car and generally makes the hapless Gay Focker (Ben Stiller) green with envy. The bad news? Wilson is onscreen for all of 10 minutes. The rest of the time is devoted to the antics of father-in-law-from-hell Robert De Niro, who suspects Gay of stepping out with a very friendly pharmaceutical rep (Jessica Alba). Barbra Streisand, Dustin Hoffman and, especially, Laura Dern bring the funny to their small roles, but the "Fockers" franchise has worn out its welcome. Extras: featurettes, gag reel, alt ending and opening and deleted scenes.

'Barney's Version' (Sony Pictures)
Canadian writer Mordecai Richler's novel "Barney's Version" is the inspiration for the film from director Richard J. Lewis. The book is an autobiographical tale told mostly from the standpoint of Barney Panofsky, a Canadian TV producer who's unlucky in love. Paul Giamatti stars as Barney, and for his performance, the actor took home a Golden Globe. The film's fun stems from an entertaining screenplay in the hands of a talented cast that includes Rosamund Pike, Dustin Hoffman, Minnie Driver and Scott Speedman. The viewer gets into the Barney's life before his first wedding, which is over before it even starts. Eventually, he moves on to his second wife, but that relationship has no future because Barney meets the gal of his dreams at his wedding. His mi...
