FIFTY-SIX high school students at Pickering High School, with the Durham District School Board are getting a taste of what it is like to be a Calypsonian. They are working in groups of four, under the direction of their teacher Shaundell Parris. Normally they are exposed to rock, rave music and the whole gamut of other Canadian cultural expressions. "We are opening a door to them so it should be good," says Parris.

The best chance for Regional School Unit 5 to pass a budget might rest in getting the vote out because there is little money left to trim, school board members say.
Voters in Durham and Pownal overwhelmingly defeated the new consolidated district's $22.7 million budget on Thursday, with 95 percent and 75 percent rejecting it in those towns, respectively.

We agree [Natalie Beyer] would be an exemplary member of Durham's school board - just not at the cost of losing [Stephen A Martin], who now has eight years on the board and an intimate understanding of school policy and operations. Critics have questioned Martin's dedication to the schools and his priorities since his recent vote against asking the district's top administrators to take voluntary pay cuts to help save money. (Martin was joined in opposition by board chairwoman Minnie Forte-Brown and members Omega Curtis-Parker and Fredrick Davis. He said executive salaries need to stay competitive to keep the district from losing top administrators.)

DISTRICT 9 (CARY): Bill Fletcher, the incumbent, is running again. He ran for state superintendent of public instruction last year, and the drawn-out process of his defeat (which, if you need to know more, is discussed in "Remember Bush v. Gore?" indyweek.com/durham/2005-05-25/citizen.html) meant he didn't file for this seat until two other strong candidates had jumped in. Fletcher we know--Republican, strong advocate of the school system, but anti-sex education and a GLBT-intolerant one at that. Eleanor Goettee is the Democrat. She's executive director of the N.C. Professional Teaching Standards Commission and runs a public-speaking company, too--which shows, by the way. Good speaker, emphasis on retaining good teachers and putting kids first, deftly avoided all the big political issue...

Wednesday night's Regional School Unit 5 board meeting did not draw dozens to protest the proposed budget, as it did two weeks ago, but a few lawmakers and town officials said they might have solutions for what led to the protest: Pownal's tax problem.
The meeting was the last before the board votes June 3 on its proposed budget of $23.5 million for the newly consolidated school district, which includes Freeport, Durham and Pownal.

Open Stage's performance space is half of a Strip District warehouse. With the rain drumming on the roof, boyish, sandy-haired Durham puzzles out an early scene in which teen-age [Myrna]'s older boyfriend, Jim, surprises her after hours at the diner where she waitresses. In one exchange, Myrna recounts a crude joke she's just.heard about [Myra]'s sexual encounters with high school jocks. Jim (played by [Diana Ifft]) laughs, then asks Myrna: "What if the captain of the football team glances your way?" Myrna relates it all back to her libertine sister: "[H]e's already scored a touchdown at my sister's goalpost.

The Indy's endorsement ("A tough call in Durham," June 2) strongly supported my candidacy ("[Natalie Beyer] would be an exemplary member of Durham's school board") but chose the incumbent because he "has been able to explain ... the schools budget." With all due respect, I have a master's in Healthcare Administration from UNC-CH with a concentration in Financial Management. Finance is what I am trained to do. However, budgetary experience should never be a substitute for educational vision, dedication and advocacy.
