After closed-door deliberations Wednesday night that lasted more than two hours, the board for Regional School Unit 5 voted 6-5 to name Durham's Shannon Welsh interim superintendent of the newly consolidated district. Freeport-Pownal Superintendent Elaine Tomaszewki, the other candidate, will serve in a capacity yet to be determined for the district, but both she and Welsh have contracts through June 2010 that must be honored, said Board Chairwoman Laurie Poissonnier.
Parents tell board about school bus problems
The families of former defendants Collin Finnerty, 20; Reade Seligmann, 21; and David Evans, 23; are expected to file civil suits against Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong, the Durham Police Dept., and the city and county of Durham, for what they believe were false and malicious prosecutions, based on false allegations of rape filed by a Black exotic dancer. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A senior prosecutor in the Durham County district attorney's office will take over as acting district attorney, replacing a judge who initially served in place of the disgraced Mike Nifong, the governor said Thursday. David J. Saacks, chief assistant district attorney, will lead the office until a permanent successor is appointed or elected, Gov. Mike Easley said in a statement.
Durham School Services said it plans to eliminate 49 jobs and close its center in Richland at the end of the month, after the North Allegheny School District notified the company that it won't renew a transportation contract. The Illinois-based school busing company said in a notice sent this week to the state Department of Labor and Industry that it will close its Valencia Road facility around June 30.

Rush Limbaugh called the two women strippers "hos," and later apologized saying "I regret you heard me say that." And Michael savage referred to the alleged victim as a "Durham dirt-bag" and "dirty, verminous Black stripper."
