NEW YORK -- Investors would like a definitive answer to the question: Is the economy in fact in recovery? The answers this week may not be conclusive, but they might remove some of the uncertainty that has made stock trading choppy lately.
Investors will get the Commerce Department's first report on third-quarter gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the economy's health. The week will also bring reports on housing prices and new home sales, consumer confidence and durable goods orders, a key indicator for the manufacturing industry.

Solid economic growth pushed the overall Mountain States Business Conditions index in April to its highest level since September, but economic weakness in Utah's durable goods sector sent the leading economic indicator plummeting in the state.
The April index for the Mountain States rose to 62.5, up from March's 59.5. In Utah, the index dropped to 48.5, down from March's strong showing of 58.9. An index reading of 50 or higher indicates economic expansion.
