  • Andy Murray got off to a winning start Monday at the Dubai Tennis Championships, a tournament missing many top players who are either boycotting or injured, including defending champion Andy Roddick, who won at Memphis on Sunday. Murray advanced when Sergiy Stakhovsky retired while trailing 6-7 (3), 6-3, 5-3. Both players were bothered by ankle injuries, but Stakhovsky could not finish. He called it quits with the fourth-ranked Murray leading 30-0 in the ninth game. Qualifier Marco Chiudenelli of Switzerland also advanced, beating seventh-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 7-6 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (7). Fourth- seeded David Ferrer of Spain defeated Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, and fifth-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia rallied to beat Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.

  • MAYOR Richard Daley was in Dubai this week discussing - believe it or not - economic and educational issues with the country's ruling leader. We hope that he found the time to follow the week's developments, because one which occurred right in the emirate of Dubai can provide him with an inkling of what could take place in Chicago should the city succeed (as we hope it won't) in its bid to bring the Olympics here. Israel's Shahar Pe'er, the country's first woman to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open and the first to reach a Grand Slam final (Jewish Star, Sept. 7, 2007; Feb. 1, 2008), had been anticipating playing in this week's Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships in Dubai.

  • DUBAI, United Arab Emirates Roger Federer is on a losing streak for the second time in four months. The top-ranked Federer, who won three Grand Slam titles last year but has struggled since the U.S. Open, lost to Andy Murray, 6-7 (6- 8), 6-3, 6-4, Monday in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

  • At Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Andy Roddick served his way past another top-five opponent, beating Novak Djokovic 7-6 (5), 6-3 Friday to advance to the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships. The sixth-seeded American had 14 aces against the third-ranked Djokovic. Like No. 2 Rafael Nadal, who lost to Roddick on Thursday, Djokovic failed to break Roddick's serve. Roddick said the tournament couldn't have gone better. "There's not much I'm not happy with as far as the week goes so far," Roddick said. After years of trying to draft and develop a front-line center, the move finally gives the Thunder a proven talent inside.
