Wofford is director of the Shenandoah Valley Network of citizens groups working to preserve rural lands and communities and to strengthen the valley's rural economy.
A dozen Shenandoah Valley residents and I went to Washington on July 8, where I served as a witness at a congressional oversight hearing. The focus was a U.S. Forest Service proposal to ban a controversial natural gas drilling technique -- horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing -- from more than 1 million acres of public land in Western Virginia.

NEW HAVEN -- The 10th annual meeting to review the management plan for Lake Whitney and the Mill River will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Whitney Water Center, 945 Whitney Ave. The snow date is Thursday. As part of the reactivation of the Lake Whitney reservoir as a source of public drinking water, the Regional Water Authority developed a management plan to control environmental impacts on Lake Whitney and the Mill River.
Before developing the management plan, the authority worked with scientists to identify potential environmental impacts from resuming water withdrawals from Lake Whitney and provided a set of recommendations to protect the environmental quality of Lake Whitney and the downstream Mill River, according to RWA spokeswoman Joan Huwiler. Input was also provided by the...

The 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) require that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or the agency) establish criteria for a program to monitor unregulated contaminants and publish a list of up to 30 contaminants to be monitored every five years. This final rule meets the SDWA requirement by publishing the third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Regulation (i.e., UCMR 3), listing the unregulated contaminants to be monitored and addressing the requirements for such monitoring. This final rule describes analytical methods to monitor for 28 chemical contaminants and describes the monitoring for two viruses. UCMR 3 provides EPA and other interested parties with scientifically valid data on the occurrence of these contaminants in drinking water, perm...
