MOUNDSVILLE - When Moundsville's reservoir dropped more than 10 feet in the course of a few days last month, officials began searching for what they believed would be a major water line leak.
What they didn't expect to find is that the water level drop would be from natural gas drilling companies using 9 million gallons of water as part of their hydraulic fracking operations.

The oil and gas drilling industry has been reluctant to disclose all the contents of the hydraulic fracturing fluid, saying some information is a trade secret that would give competitors an advantage.
By and large, that argument is specious," said energy expert Kent Moors, a Duquesne University professor and scholar in residence at Duquesne's Institute for Energy and the Environment. Revealing the additives and chemicals in the fluid does not reveal the formula used to make the fracking fluid, he said.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After a childhood spent moving around, Patti Gorcheff vowed that she'd never uproot her daughter. But she says wastewater disposal in her area from an oil and gas drilling frenzy that's hit Ohio and other states has forced her to change her mind.
She and her husband are selling the family home and fleeing with their 15-year-old before the drinking water becomes contaminated, said Gorcheff, 56, of rural North Lima in northeastern Ohio. She's heard the accounts from neighboring Pennsylvania of contaminant- laced water being discharged into rivers - and of fears there that, despite officials' assurances, drinking water might be harmed.

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. - The rolling hills and scenic bluffs of western Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota hide a valuable resource that has sparked what's been called a modern-day gold rush.
The object of desire is not gold but a soft sandstone needed by drilling companies to unlock underground natural gas and oil supplies in a controversial practice called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

Compressed natural gas is the glamorous alternative fuel today.
And why not - CNG is promoted by billionaire T. Boone Pickens on national TV, mentioned in speeches by President Barack Obama and publicized by the largest drilling companies in Oklahoma like Chesapeake Energy Corp., Devon Energy Corp., Continental Resources Inc. and SandRidge Energy Inc.

Drilling companies rapidly expanding their U.S. operations in places such as Pennsylvania's vast Marcellus shale formation repeatedly tout they are providing American jobs and securing the nation's energy future.
Yet, a Tribune-Review examination found foreign companies are buying significant shares of these drilling projects and making plans for facilities to liquify and ship more of that natural gas overseas.

A jobs curriculum funded by the Marcellus shale industry could be in Western Pennsylvania middle schools as early as fall.
Four Marcellus shale drilling companies donated most of the $65,000 that the nonprofit Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania spent to research and develop its new Careers in Energy program, said Bill Lucas, JA's chief development officer.
