For Benjamin F. Perkins, public service was a lifetime calling.
Mr. Perkins, who died Monday, April 25, 2011, at 86, was a young Marine serving in the Pacific during World War II. Later, in the 1950s, he was appointed as Irwin's police chief. Then, around 1971, Perkins became chief of the Irwin Volunteer Fire Department -- a position he held for the next 15 years.
