In May 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville and his friend Gustave de Beaumont landed at Newport RI after 37 days at sea. Tocquevile was a deputy royal prosecutor, Beaumont his immediate superior. The two had been granted leaves of absence from their duties in the French judicial system to study American prisons, and a book-length report they co-authored upon their return, Du systeme penitentiaire aux Etats-Unis et de son application en France, testifies to the earnestness with which they undertook their mission. But the letters they wrote from America show them avidly observing everything around them. Prison reform was their passport to the New World; it legitimated what proved to be a cultural enquiry of seminal importance. Here, Tocqueville's that reflect his anxieties ar...

Part of drinking responsibly at AleFest is to e informed about the vast selection of beers. With more than 300 beers to choose from, you can't possibly try them all, so having a game plan will go a long way to maximize your enjoyment. If you're really serious about getting full appr eciation of every beer you taste, start with the less aggressive flavors first, then progress into the more complex and strong ales later. Otherwise, your taste buds will get nuked early on.
Basic Game Plan A: Begin with hefeweizens, or wheat beers, and then go with lagers or mild English ales, then to Belgian ales, on to the porters and stouts, then to American pale ales and IPAs, and barley wines. Many of the pours are unusual or outstanding and worth the hot sticky wait in line, while others are possibly ...

It's not her fault. When a customer scatters spent chicken bones around the bar top, leaves a shitty tip, namedrops, big-times, asks too many questions, just drinks water (or worse, milk), flags a bartender down without having their drink order ready, orders drinks without having their money ready, complains drinks are too weak, complains about the head on a draught beer, asks "what's the cheapest thing you got," orders a Bloody Mary after 1 p.m. or exhibits any number of other annoying behaviors, it's like a little dam breaking in the reservoir. Each well has a different capacity, but they all run dry sooner or later.

Livestock can however play a key role in lessening the impact of HIV/AIDS in affected communities. Poultry, sheep and goats can provide affected households with renewable assets, income and the possibility to improve the household diet. These species are easily managed, affordable, prolific and have short reproduction cycles. Moreover, most women in rural areas are experienced in keeping them. Small stock are also more appropriate for elderly and orphanheaded households. Simple, low-cost projects can increase the productivity of small ruminants through improved housing, feeding and animal health care. What is still required is for the development community to fully appreciate the contribution that livestock can make.

It's halfway through the 2011 thoroughbred racing season. It's been mostly an uneventful six months compared to midpoints in 2010 (Zenyatta fever), 2009 (Rachel Alexandra on the scene) and 2008 (Big Brown winning first two legs of the Triple Crown and Curlin dominating the handicap division), respectively.
I wouldn't say the glass is half empty, as the sport has generated some positive press through the Triple Crown season.

Doria's is named for its owners, Jim and Sharon Doria, who intend to offer a selection of steak and seafood dishes in addition to freshly made cuisine from "the boot." Think lasagna and spaghetti and meatballs in a simple yet elegant marinara sauce. Jim notes that they plan to supply "quality product at an affordable price," while putting "emphasis on the use of Vermont and locally grown products.
We purchased the farm in 1999 as a dairy, but we couldn't survive [on] dairy farming," [Anne Tisbert] says. "We moved on to organic vegetables, and it all worked out." She's hoping her farm's expansion into a new urban market will work out, too.

Are there any other anchors in Monterey County? Not in Weekly readers' minds. For the seventh-straight year, [Dan Green] wins the title, and for good reason. While other anchors may choose to play it straight, Green's not afraid to use wit and sardonic humor, especially when it comes to celebrity stunts and animal stories. And when it comes to hard news, like crude oil prices, Green's a straight shooter. During a recent Action News 6 report where the math didn't add up, Green improvised. "You don't care," he said, after realizing the numbers weren't right. And then he told it like it is: "Gas prices at the pump are going to go up. It's going to cost you more to fill up your tank.
