On any morning in downtown Beirut locals sit over their coffee and newspapers. It is a safe bet they are reading pretty much the same as they have since they went to the polls on June 7: the latest twist in their politicians' attempts to forge a new government from the complex ethnic, religions and political factions that all call this country home. In truth, Lebanon has been doing pretty well even in its absence. Beirut and most of Lebanon's towns and cities -- especially along the coast -- are buzzing. As Beirut booms, many expatriates have returned as opportunities abroad have dwindled with the global recession. These are highly qualified and well-connected people, accustomed to being successful and prosperous; particularly with no social security, they are not just going to sit arou...
The banner draped across one of downtown Beirut's plush ice- cream parlors reads "Taste the Reconciliation. The specialty of the house is a multiflavored melange that includes all the colors of the parties of Lebanon's political spectrum, now ostensibly united after three years of discord.
Golan was later cleared of the charges, and was part of a successful class-action suit against authorities. And a 2004 report by the Miami-Dade County Internal Review Panel confirms the outline of Golan's account. While the report exonerated "the vast majority" of police from wrong-doing, it noted that protesters faced "an unprecedented police presence," and that persistent police and media warnings about "anarchists, anarchists, anarchists" coming from outside Miami had "contributed to a police mindset to err ... on the side of a dramatic show of force. There will be negotiations with the city and police department on when and where [events can be held], and getting die permits," says Paul Le Blanc. Le Blanc is a La Roche College history professor working with other groups at college...

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese heeded Hezbollah's call Friday, flooding downtown Beirut to pressure the U.S.-supported government to resign, but Prime Minister Fuad Saniora showed no signs of backing down in a confrontation that could tear apart the country. The protesters raised a deafening noise of chants and revolutionary and nationalist songs just outside the main government offices. Barbed wire and armored vehicles separated the demonstrators from the buildings where Saniora and some of his ministers were holed up.
BEIRUT -- As tens of thousands of Hezbollah-dominated protesters filled downtown Beirut for a third day to bring down the national government, a deeply divided Lebanon lurched into yet another political and social crisis. This one exposes the bloody vestiges of the country's 1975-90 civil war, with its chameleon-like alliances typical of Lebanese political parties.
BEIRUT, Lebanon - Westerners fled by land, sea and air Monday as Israel sent ground troops into Lebanon briefly and Hezbollah rockets knocked down a three-story house in northern Israel. However, there were signs of movement on the diplomatic front to end the worst fighting in 24 years. The exodus of tourists left downtown Beirut eerily silent, with the shutters down on fancy stores and restaurants in a stark reminder of the country's civil war. Israeli military officials said an airstrike in Lebanon destroyed at least one long-range Iranian missile capable of hitting Tel Aviv.
The unrest spread to other [Shi]'a neighborhoods of Beirut, where rioters blocked roads and burned car tires, including the highway to Lebanon's international airport, the officials said. Troops blocked roads in the commercial center in downtown Beirut to stop Hizbullah supporters riding on motorcycles from reaching the area. The protests only ended after [Hassan Nasrallah] personally made a plea for calm on television during the night in order "to protect the country's security and stability. "He also called for the need to find ways to protect "political and moral values.
Hundreds of thousands crowded the square as former President Amin Gemayel, the father of the slain Christian leader, exclaimed that this assassination should spark "a second independence uprising" for real change in Lebanon. Opposition supporters had set up a tent city in downtown Beirut on December 1 to oust the Prime Minister, who refused to resign and accused Hizbullah of planning a coup. Prime Minister Siniora proposed tax increases as part of an economic reform plan that was scheduled to be presented at an international donors' conference in Paris in January.
BIKFAYA, Lebanon -- Lebanon braced for more turmoil Wednesday as leaders of an anti-Syrian movement called on their followers to take to the streets to protest the assassination of Christian leader Pierre Gemayel, whose death has sparked fears of a revival of Lebanon's civil war. The summons to turn out in strength for Thursday's funeral ceremony in downtown Beirut was part of an effort to reinforce the embattled government of Prime Minister Fuad Siniora in the face of recent threats by the radical Shiite Hezbollah movement to topple the country's U.S.-backed government.
