Montgomery County is considering implementing a closing cost assistance program to help first-time home buyers with moderate incomes cover settlement costs. For families that have saved for years to afford down payments, closing costs can often be an insurmountable surprise, but this assistance can help them get over the hump, said Legislative Analyst Aron Trombka, who prepared a report on the program for a meeting yesterday of the Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee of the County Council.

Washington Realtors, a statewide trade group, is urging the 2009 Legislature to act aggressively to help revive the states lagging housing market.
