Now that Douglas Bruce's departure from El Paso County government is imminent, his colleagues aren't holding back. Tension between Bruce and his fellow county commissioners, as well as other elected officials and county staff, is running high now that the Republican has announced his intention to pack up his ultraconservative criticisms of members of his political party and take them to the state Legislature.

Twice last week, senior local bureaucrats launched outrageously over-the-top, ad-hominem attacks on a prominent elected official and citizen -- attacks that are being tolerated by other local "leaders" only because the target was smaller-government gadfly Douglas Bruce. City Manager Lorne Kramer and County Attorney Bill Louis should be reprimanded, if not fired, for their actions. Kramer and Louis can say they were speaking as private citizens, but they are not ordinary citizens so this is a charade. Each works for all the people of the city and county, even those who happen to admire and support Bruce. Each earns a good living courtesy of the taxpayers. They are paid to execute, rather than make, policy. Each has an interest in growing local government.
Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan said yesterday that he would defy the federal government by importing prescription drugs from Canada, only to say later that he would not advise county employees to break the law. The change drew sharp criticism from the County Council President Tom Perez, Takoma Park Democrat.
COLUMBUS -- Just two days after Helen Jones-Kelley's resignation, Gov. Ted Strickland named her replacement as director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services -- Douglas E. Lumpkin, currently director of the same agency in Franklin County. Doug's background in public administration, government and technology, combined with his strong commitment to public service, make him an ideal candidate to lead the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services," Strickland said in a press release on Friday, Dec. 19.
LAWRENCE -- The Douglas County administrator has proposed a budget that would require a 16.6 percent increase in property taxes. Administrator Craig Weinaug says the proposal would be the largest property tax increase in his more than three decades in local government.
Gripping a cashier's check for $1 million, El Paso County Commissioner Douglas Bruce offered Thursday to buy a government building that's scheduled for demolition to make way for a parking garage. The amount Bruce offered is less than half the worth of the fourstory office structure, known as the Atrium Building, at 326 S. Tejon St. According to the El Paso County Assessor's Office, the building is worth $2.3 million.

Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan is working with the U.S. government on illegal-immigration issues by participating in a program to catch those who smuggle illegals into the country. County police Chief J. Thomas Manger said yesterday that officers have undergone awareness training, learning to look for "red flags" that signal involuntary servitude and human trafficking and how to pose questions that might expose trafficking incidents.
