A group of homeless men and women bundled in heavy jackets huddled around a picnic table Thursday in a park south of downtown. The group at Dorchester Park was trying to stay warm on the chilly day, reading newspapers and gossiping. There was nothing that made this day different, except maybe the company.
I live across the street from the commuter rail and Brockton Transit Authority," says [Michael Allwood]. "I have everything I need within a small radius. I have parking, it's quiet, I have access to transportation, four strip malls, my car insurance is lower and groceries are cheaper. "It's all about pure dollars and cents," says Brett Harding, CEO of State Wide Home Buyers Group in Dorchester. She predicts that in 5 to 10 years, "unless you are upper income, you won't live [in Boston]." "I was astonished when I saw a two family home on Dorchester's Fuller St. sell for $600,000," said Harding. "I was like, 'Am I missing something here?' I love the city, but it is becoming tougher to economically live in Boston. The city is heading towards becoming an upper and lower income neighborhoo...
Forming such sustainable relationships inherently requires addressing issues of privilege. Growing Power manages a farm on the edge of Cabrini Green, Chicago's most notorious housing project. The site is owned by Fourth Presbyterian Church, the wealthiest congregations in the city. "The work that we're doing is social justice work," says [Erika Allen], who is bi-racial. "For white folks to support and ally with people of color and communities that are struggling, they have to understand that it's not just about knowing how to grow lettuce. It's important that people doing these projects are very transparent about why they're there. In West Oakland, home to City Slickers and People's Grocery, liquor stores outnumber grocery stores 40 to one. The most readily available food is fried. On ...

These are great kids, they just need a push," she said. Jasmine Welcome, for instance, is one of six Dorchester representatives on the Mayors Youth Council, an outreach and advocacy group for Boston youth. "I did gain the confidence to do it" through BSP, she explained. "It does take a lot of confidence to walk into a place you don't know, or to go up and say, 'Hi, my name is,' if you don't know someone. Sixteen-year-old Anthony Norman echoed [Frank Cruz]'s sentiment. "I have friends who grew up in the suburbs and don't know too much about urban culture," said the junior from BC High School. "Being able to teach them certain things, making them cognizant and aware of the world around them - it's very empowering." "The goal of Boston Scholars isn't just to give you something," [Zakiya ...

Q: What did you use to do? A: I started my first frame job 29 years ago. I've had other jobs in between there, but I've always been involved in framing. Years ago I had a real estate business in Massachusetts, and then I actually for years and years ran a shelter for homeless families, pro bono, in Dorchester, Mass. I started that with a group of friends in the early '80s. But to relax, I've always had my fingers in framing. It's what I love. Some people find a job they really love and relaxes them; that's what framing does for me. Even when I used to do volunteer presidential advance work and political advance work, if somebody asked me, can you come to Iowa or wherever next week, I'd say no, I have to go to my framing job. They would all laugh. I would be telling a president or vice p...
Just after midnight on Feb. 3, 1943, an act of extraordinary unselfishness by a group of men became a legend of martyrdom and sacrifice. When the Army ship Dorchester was torpedoed by the Germans just south of Greenland that night, its passengers and crew had 25 minutes to get off the boat. As 902 people went for the life jackets, it quickly was discovered there weren't near enough. Of the 13 lifeboats, only two functioned.
