Weather buffs accustomed to going online and viewing Doppler radar images from the National Weather Service's Charleston Forecast Office have had to take their weather surfing elsewhere during the past week, following a series of repair issues.
It turned out to be a multitude of problems," said Alan Rezek, chief meteorologist. "First, there was a problem with the hardware itself in the radar dome up on the hill. A slip ring had to be replaced, and then there was a problem with the computer up there that translates the radar data into useful information.

PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. - Firefighters searched one splintered pile after another for survivors Thursday, combing the remains of houses and neighborhoods pulverized by the nation's deadliest tornado outbreak in almost four decades. At least 290 people were killed across six states - more than two-thirds of them in Alabama, where large cities bore the half-mile-wide scars the twisters left behind.
The death toll from Wednesday's storms seems out of a bygone era, before Doppler radar and pinpoint satellite forecasts were around to warn communities of severe weather. Residents were told the tornadoes were coming up to 24 minutes ahead of time, but they were just too wide, too powerful and too locked onto populated areas to avoid a horrifying body count.

As the Honda popped up over the crest of a hill on North Mill Road in Salem and whizzed by the patrol car headed the other way, the Doppler radar's popping -noises went up in frequency and in pitch. Officer William Weeks glanced down at the device in his center console to confirm that the speeder had hit 45 mph in a residential zone.
Weeks quickly slowed down, turned around in a driveway and stepped on the gas to catch up with the Honda as it turned onto Craig Avenue. Weeks radioed to let dispatchers know he was making a traffic stop, turned on his lights, and typed the letters and numbers of the vehicle's license plate in his laptop, beginning the process of writing his report.
